Approved Document L2A (ADL2A) quotes relevant kgCO2 per kWh emission factor on Grid supplied electricity; at 0.422 kgCO2 /kWh, we need to save all the generated electricity we can.
Here’s how Suka heaters’ impact on CO2 emission is compared to Night Storage Heaters.
For a well insulated 3 bedroom house of double glazing, Sueka will put in a total of 7.5kW heaters for an ambient temperature of 20ºC. At full capacity, Suka heaters churn out 32ºC of heat. But a normal healthy room temperature should be an average 20ºC at +/-5ºC outside in winter. Sueka radiators therefore need work only on average at 60% capacity to maintain that warmth.
Impact on environment as a result of its use of grid generated power:
= (7.5kW heater) x (24hrs in a day) x (0.25 being quarter of actual usage time) x (60% capacity usage) x (220 days in a year of winter) =
= 5,940kwh per annum
Therefore, 0.422 kgCO2 /kWh x 5,940kwh per annum = 2.507 tons of CO2
Thus effect of the homeowner on the environment through Suka heaters’ consumption of Grid generated power is only 2.5 tons of CO2 per annum.
Now, consider a night storage heater below even at Economy 7 so-called cheap tariff:
The same house will require about 14kW of Night Storage Heaters or a combination with panel heaters. An additional boost with 4.1 or more kWh in the evening may also be required.
Impact on environment as a result of its use of grid generated power:
= (14kW heater) x (7hrs Economy 7 usage) + (3.4kW x 2hrs boost in the evening) x (220 days in a year of winter) =
= 23,056kWh per annum
Therefore, 0.422 kgCO2 /kWh x 23,056kWh per annum = 9.730 tons of CO2
Thus effect of the homeowner on the environment through Night Storage heaters’ consumption of Grid generated power is only 9.7 tons of CO2 per annum.
Given that the rugged German construction seals Suka’s heating elements completely from surface atmosphere, there’s no further CO2 produced at the point of use.
This is not the case with Night Storage Heaters or convector panel heaters which have heating elements exposed to surface atmosphere and thus burn any dust particles it comes into contact with. Some heaters have even out-moded elements that can be seen glowing red hot when switched on. So at the point of use, Night Storage Heaters burn oxygen and produce CO2 emission in addition to what they cause power stations to produce above. Even if the element is tungsten, its exposure to surface atmosphere is still unhealthy for the environment due to constant power intake burning of surface particles.
